Occupation Day Schedule http://occupysd.org/2011/10/07/occupation-day-schedule/ http://occupysd.org/2011/10/07/occupation-day-schedule/#comments Fri, 07 Oct 2011 08:53:31 +0000 Toby Benjamin http://occupysd.org/?p=508 Hey, everybody. Just wanted to make sure everybody had access to the final plan. In respect of the events taking place for the Jewish High Holy Day Yom Kippur, we will not be occupying the San Diego Civic Center on the first night of our occupation, but we will still be occupying our fine city. The schedule of events will be:

  • October 7th, 2:00 – Meet at Children’s Park, Front Street and Island Avenue
  • October 7th, 4:00 – March to San Diego Civic Center to gain support and pick up occupiers from the originally planned location; march returns to Children’s Park
  • October 8th, 4:00 – March to relocate to San Diego Civic Center to continue occupation indefinitely

Congratulations, everyone! Our hard work has finally come to fruition – the Occupation is here.

CLARIFICATION: We will only be at Children’s Park for one night, but we will be Occupying the San Diego Civic Center indefinitely.

Tomorrow’s The Big Day! http://occupysd.org/2011/10/06/tomorrows-the-big-day/ http://occupysd.org/2011/10/06/tomorrows-the-big-day/#comments Thu, 06 Oct 2011 22:08:13 +0000 Abel Thomas http://occupysd.org/?p=439 I can’t believe the time is almost here: tomorrow marks the first day of our occupation! In the spirit of the moment, here’s a list of things to consider bringing (graciously compiled by Kaya & Emily):

Food & Drink
• WATER: 1 gallon of water per person per day. Bring a container to refill that you can keep on your body.
• Reusable bowl, cup, utensils. Light, durable, heat friendly! Wet wipes for cleaning dishes.
• Bring enough food for yourself for as many meals as you think you’ll be there. Non-perishables!
• Powdered Emergen-C, Gatorade, or other electrolyte/vitamin drink.
• Tea bags, coffee, hot chocolate, powdered creamer, sugar.
• Sealable bins/coolers to transport and store your food.
• Easy-pack meals with minimal packaging waste, spoilage, cooking or refrigeration:
Breakfast — protein bars, orange, apples, rice cakes, breakfast bars, bagels, etc.
Lunch — bread, rolls, peanut butter, carrots, celery, nutella, tunafish, hardboiled eggs
Dinner — tortillas, olive oil, salt, canned refried beans, rice, dehydrated foods, zucchini
Snacks — nuts, crackers, jerky, trailmix, snackbars, dried fruit

Clothing
• Protection from cold: you’ll be outside overnight. Hats, gloves, wool sweaters, bring them!
• Protection from warm: you’ll be in the sun during the day. Bring a hat with a brim, sunscreen, maybe an umbrella to make shade.
• Best solution for both of these is layerable clothing (tank top -> short sleeve -> long sleeve -> hoodie -> rain/windbreaker)
• Rain Poncho (garbage bags work if you cut holes for head and arms)
• A couple of pairs of socks & underwear.
• Comfortable (hiking, running, walking) shoes.

Camp Supplies
• Shelter: bring a tent. Much of the civic center plaza is cemented over and we are lucky in SD with lows of only 50-60′s. However, the ground can get cold at night and you’ll need all the warmth you can get.
• Warm Sleeping Bag, bedroll, extra blanket, pillow.
• Ear plugs.
• Tarps for below and above your sleeping bag (also convenient for moving materials)
• Flashlights, headlamps, glowsticks, battery-operated lanterns, rechargeable/non-rechargable batteries
• Duct tape, rope, carabiners.
• Solar oven.

Hygiene & First Aid
• Wet wipes work great when you can’t shower as often as you’d like.
• The keeper/ diva cup is a reusable alternative to tampons and pads, it’s a silicone cup that you insert. No harsh chemicals in
your body, eco-friendly and CHEAP.
• OTC Medications: ibuprofen, acetaminophen, benadryl, neosporin.
• A first aid kit with sterile bandages, bandaids, gauze, tape, etc.
• Toilet paper & portable tissue packs! (public bathrooms will run out)
• Slip-on shoes/flip-flops (for late night bathroom trips)
• Toiletries Bag – toothbrush / toothpaste / waterless soap / waterless shampoo / deodorant
• Hand-towel, bandanna.
• Lotion, sunblock, lip moisturizer.
• Eye drops
• Your prescription meds, vitamins, etc.

Techie Stuff
• Map of downtown San Diego
• Cell Phone (charged batteries, crank/solar charger, car charger)
• Cheap Walkie Talkies (extra batteries, rechargeable is best)
• Wi-fi hotspot, laptop (optional)
• Solar panels, battery chargers, small generators with fuel (optional)
• Blue bins for transporting all stuff

Entertainment, Community & Culture
• We’re in this for the long haul and we cant rely on good old corporate entertainment . We’re going to need stuff to entertain
ourselves. Have you wanted to learn how to knit? Or play chess? Or learn an instrument? Bring it!
• Supplies for making signs
• Cameras (photo & film)
• Portable instruments: small hand drums, bongos, tambourines, guitars, etc.
• Gifts to share (food, water, handmade crafts, etc.)
• Pen, paper for writing poetry, songs, thoughts, observations, journal
• Educational books, films on topic for inspiration!

Security
• Bandana, vinegar, liquid Maalox, saline solution (in case of pepper spray).
• Do you know your rights? Find a pamphlet or ask someone to teach you beforehand
• Identify 1-2 specific “buddies” to stick together/watch over in case of emergency
• Decide on your preferred level of involvement before you go. Whether you want to or can afford to get arrested? We all have
different privileges that may affect this, e.g. citizenship status, criminal records, jobs

General Notes:
-if you have something you are concerned will get lost in the fray, its probably better not to bring it. Otherwise, bring a backpack that you will carry at all times.
-disposables are great, but the more trash we generate the more we have to deal with cleaning up. So get rid of excess packaging before you get there. Think portable!

What Is Our One Demand? http://occupysd.org/2011/10/05/what-is-our-one-demand/ http://occupysd.org/2011/10/05/what-is-our-one-demand/#comments Wed, 05 Oct 2011 23:35:36 +0000 Abel Thomas http://occupysd.org/?p=346 GA meeting in progress

GA meetings are held nightly at 7pm (photo by Sam Hodgson)

To achieve social and economic justice.

Standing in solidarity with Occupy Wall Street NYC, hundreds of San Diego citizens will peacefully occupy the Civic Center Plaza in downtown San Diego, adjacent to San Diego City Hall (1200 3rd Ave), starting on October 7, 2011. This nonviolent occupation is in protest of the global financial corruption currently invading politics, media and corporations, exemplified by the recent financial industry meltdown and subsequent recession.

The occupation will continue indefinitely until a list of demands in solidarity with Occupy Wall Street NYC are met by all levels of government, including the City and County of San Diego, the state of California, the Federal Government, and by private and public banks and corporations.

The long term and overnight occupation will include marches, sit-ins, educational programs, practice of the democratic process, and General Assembly meetings wherein solutions to overlapping issues are identified, to name a few. This diversified group makes decisions via consensus.

Participants are requested to meet at Children’s Park (1st St & Island Ave) by 3:30 p.m. on Friday, October 7. At 4:00 p.m., the group will march to Civic Center Plaza. Children’s Park is adjacent to the Convention Center Trolley Station and is two blocks south of Nordstrom Horton Plaza.

“The Occupy Wall Street movement is sweeping across the country. People from all walks of life, political persuasions and occupations are joining together to demand that our economic system become more just,” said Ray Lutz of Occupy San Diego. “Join our movement. With you, we can bring about change.”

The top 1% of our nation control nearly half the wealth in this country, while the top 20% control a stunning 80% of it. This lopsided distribution of wealth, coupled with outsourcing of jobs, bailouts, secret loans, subsidies, and profiteering in the financial sector have resulted in massive foreclosures, retirement and investment fiduciary failure, job losses, and homelessness. We, the American citizens, must reclaim our country and put ourselves on the line for peace and justice. It is time for us to discover both who we — the other 99% — are and what we believe and want. Now is the time for us to act. Unless we do, we are nothing. When we do, our nation will be restored.

Occupy San Diego is reaching out to existing political groups, active military personnel, veterans, activist groups and labor unions in the San Diego community to participate in the occupation. The United Steelworkers Union (USW, 1.2 million members), the Laborers’ International Union of America (LIUNA, 500,000 members), the Transport Workers Union (over 200,000 members), and National Nurses United (NNU, 170,000 members) – have already announced their support for the Occupy Wall Street protests.

About Occupy San Diego:

We are the 99%, and we will be quiet about this economic inequality no longer. We will take back for the people what already belongs to the people – our country. For more information, visit occupytogether.orgoccupywallst.org.

Website Updates http://occupysd.org/2011/10/04/website-updates/ http://occupysd.org/2011/10/04/website-updates/#comments Tue, 04 Oct 2011 21:39:25 +0000 Abel Thomas http://occupysd.org/?p=251 Hey guys! Just updated all the committees on the ‘groups’ page, based on the list that was passed around at yesterday’s meeting. Important thing to note: I disbanded the communications committee (sorry!). Now that we have this functional website, I believe their tasks have been fully covered. I have been informed that many of these members have already been redirected to logistics, but feel free to mosey on over to any other, or multiple, committees, based on your interests. If I missed any groups or made any mistakes, please message me or write on my wall. Other than that, join away!

Someone addressed a very appropriate request to me earlier about giving administrative access to all. Just to let you know the stance of the web team: for the sake of everyone’s privacy and online security, we have decided that only the web team should have administrative access to modify and add content. If you have anything you’d like to see added or changed on the website, please direct message me or voice your concerns on the web committee page. Another important point to add: we will be adding an area to access minutes of the meeting, probably as a forum thread, so keep checking in!

Other questions, concerns, comments, or feedback about the site can be directed to Toby or me. And let me just say, I am SO glad to see this site blowing up and being used by everyone! Thanks!

Welcome Occupy San Diego http://occupysd.org/2011/09/28/occupy-san-diego/ http://occupysd.org/2011/09/28/occupy-san-diego/#comments Wed, 28 Sep 2011 17:55:31 +0000 Toby Benjamin http://tobybenjamin.com/occupysd/?p=53

Welcome to the community website for Occupy San Diego. I hope to connect us all here. There are varying levels of access to administrative features, so we can keep unauthorized users from tampering with our content. At the same time, we can create an unlimited number of administrator accounts, meaning we can build our own moderation team. Term limits can of course be imposed.

It’s also worth noting that this site is built to run on a private server (which will be discussed at a GA) and is running on an Open Source platform, WordPress, in support of the ethical beliefs of Occupy Wall Street’s movement. WordPress is free to everyone and is supported and maintained by a community of tens of thousands of developers who donate time, money, advice, and volunteer community support through forums. They are a great example of our corporate-free future already in action. You can read more at WordPress.org.

This is the beginning of a beautiful democracy. As a web developer, I have strong faith in the power of the internet for communication, and I think this could be a good model for future democratic systems. Let’s use this to the best of our abilities to organize, define purpose, communicate our message, and prove the power of democracy and equality.

For the safety and security of our community, you will need to create an account to access all site features. This will allow you access to forums, group discussion, calendars, and more, as well as allow you to receive email updates from groups and the General Assembly.
